“On December 4th 2024, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) approved, during its plenary session, an own-initiative Opinion Report CCMI/231, titled “Professional services in the green transition.” The document follows the special meeting of the EU Council that took place on 17-18 April 2024 in which EU leaders committed to a new European competitiveness deal anchored in a fully integrated single market targeting the enhancement of Europe’s economic, manufacturing, industrial and technological base, thereby securing the Union’s economic resilience and industrial renewal, global competitiveness, technological leadership and attractiveness as a business location.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of continuing the ongoing green transition and the necessary steps that have to be taken by several sectors, most notably the role that professional services play in the green transition. The Opinion underlined that consistent reforms need to be carried out on education systems in order to adapt curricula to the changes in the world of work and support all relevant educational programmes (including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), to implement a new strategy for vocational education and training (VET), and to support teachers and improve coordination at EU level.

The EESC further highlighted the importance of avoiding labour and skill shortages and skill mismatches which would inhibit an effective transition. The necessity of the implementation of a joint European diploma in the area of vocational education and training and the cultivation of vocational excellence has been made part of the new Polish Presidency’s Programme, underlining the importance of this for the EU and the ley role that practice-oriented professionals have in facilitating this.
